From the moment I learned what public relations does, I was interested in it. I nailed an interview at a PR firm fresh out of college. At the beginning my job consisted of fetching coffee for my coworkers and organising files around the office, but thanks to my hardworking nature, I got promoted to handling internet stuff. I mainly de-escalated situations online, but one day I was checking emails and noticed I had a new one from someone way above me in the firm. I clicked it, and then I found out my company’s secret.
I wondered why our clients were always the ones getting arrested or involved in some sort of controversy, but in that email it became clear to me. Those people and firms basically threw money at us to fix their problems, but they didn’t realise that instead of doing that, we just stirred the pot. It was brilliant actually, but I still thought it was messed up. I pushed myself on my desk chair towards the filing cabinet and began looking through it. It was clear that we were messing up dozens of our clients’ lives. One of them stood out to me. It was a teenage girl, an influencer. We advised her to get involved in some drama on her platform, and now people were outside her house waiting for her to come out to harass her. There was contact info in her file, so I sent her an email from my private account.
The next day we met up at a quaint little cafe. I wore sunglasses and had the hood of my hoodie up, because I didn’t want anyone to approach me and didn’t want to get recognized. I wanted ten minutes with a cup of coffee until the girl showed up. I didn't recognize her, because she was sort of disguised, like me. She was wearing baggy clothes, a baseball cap and dark sunglasses.
“Olive?” I asked when I saw her. She gave me a small nod and sat down in front of me. I began telling her what my company did to her and other clients. Telling her to get involved in internet beef was just the tip of the iceberg. We had ruined many good things throughout her career. She listened quietly, but I stopped talking when I saw tears rolling down her cheeks form under her sunglasses. She took them off, but immediately covered her puffy eyes with her hands. She stifled sobs for a few seconds, and then she looked up at me. She had huge dark bags under her eyes. Her eyes also showed she had been crying for a long time. My heart broke for this girl.
“Please help me get out of it” She said to me. I pulled out a piece of paper from my bag and started explaining my plan to her. Two days later, all her accounts on everything were deactivated. Both fans and haters were shocked and restless, but I told her it would only take a couple of days for them to find some other shiny thing to be distracted by. You see, I had contacted another major influencer, and made up a rumor so horrible yet believable, that it ended Olive’s career. Olive had already made millions, and invested, so the last time I saw her, she looked happy and relieved. She hugged me tight and told me she was retiring in the countryside where she grew up.
Olive was the first person I helped escape the spotlight, but there were many more before I got caught. From actors to influencers, I helped at least one person per week. I was fulfilled and my bank account was very happy. After meeting up with a client over lunch, I returned to my office, only to find my boss looking through my emails. When she saw me, she crossed her arms and looked at me disapprovingly. “You’re fired” She said. She had opened my private email account and read through my emails with our clients. It felt as if the world had stopped. I was numb as I packed my stuff in a small box, and I was numb when I arrived at home. I didn’t know what to do, all the client files were in my former office. How would I get new clients?
